KARACHI: The legal fraternity has demanded that appropriate amendments be made to the Supreme Court Rules 1980 to ensure that the powers and discretion of the chief justices of the apex court and the high courts with regard to formation of benches and fixation of cases, etc, are shared with their senior colleagues and exercised in a structural and non-arbitrary manner.
The demand was made in a resolution that was unanimously adopted by representatives of lawyers from all over the country at a conference organised by the Karachi Bar Association at the City Courts.
Expressing serious concern on the issue of filing of a review application by the federal government against the judgement in the Faizabad sit-in case, the participants of the conference termed it an attempt to pressurise and intimidate the independence of the SC judges, especially Justice Qazi Faez Isa, it added.
The conference also called upon the Supreme Judicial Council to ensure that all the complaints and references filed under Article 209 of the Constitution against judges of the superior courts were expeditiously and transparently decided and the relevant information and statistics in this regard were publicly disclosed.
